Geotechnical fragility analysis of monopile foundations for offshore wind turbines in extreme storms

چکیده
Offshore wind turbines (OWTs) must withstand harsh environmental loads over their 20- to 30-year design life. Fragility analysis investigates the probability of damage a range hazard intensities and is integral performance-based engineering approach. The focus this paper on monopiles, which are widely used support OWTs in water depths up around 40m. presents fragility monopiles extreme storms terms geotechnical performance, measured by permanent rotation foundation. Geotechnical has so far not been comprehensively addressed due challenge predicting soil behaviour under cyclic loading estimating responses. On latter, develops efficient Karhunen-Loeve representations wave that can be combined with inexpensive probabilistic methods compute fragility. framework was demonstrated using representative scenario 5 MW OWT installed clay. Non-linear foundation response captured dynamic 3D finite element model. curves were generated subset simulation for return periods (RPs) from 1 100 years. during (with 50- 100-year RPs) significantly higher than RPs 10 years or less.

Soil–structure reliability of offshore wind turbine monopile foundations
An overview of offshore wind turbine (OWT) foundations is presented, focusing primarily on the monopile foundation. The uncertainty in offshore soil conditions as well as random wind and wave loading is currently treated with a deterministic design procedure, though some standards allow engineers to use a probability-based approach. Laterally loaded monopile foundations are typically designed u...

متن کاملSimilitude relationships for physical modelling of monopile-supported offshore wind turbines
Offshore wind turbines are considered as an important element of the future energy infrastructure. There is currently a surge in the construction of such facilities in Europe, yet there is no track record of long-term performance of these structures. Offshore wind turbines are dynamically sensitive structures because of the very nature of the structural form (tall and slender) and the different...
متن کاملReliability analysis of monopile offshore wind turbine support structures
We probe the reliability of monopile support structures designed to support industrial scale turbines along the coastal United States using stochastic models for the wind and wave loadings, and representations of the uncertainty associated with soil properties. The turbine support structure investigated is that promulgated by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory as typical of a monopile sup...
متن کاملSoil-Structure Modeling and Design Considerations for Offshore Wind Turbine Monopile Foundations
The contribution of foundation damping to offshore wind turbines (OWTs) is not well known, though researchers have back-calculated foundation damping from “rotor-stop” tests after estimating aerodynamic, hydrodynamic, and structural damping with numerical models. Because design guidelines do not currently recommend methods for determining foundation damping, it is typically neglected. This pape...
